A new hospital specializing in advanced treatments for cancer will offer metro Atlanta both health-care and economic benefits, say supporters of a project more than two years in the making.
Officials from Cancer Treatment Centers of America Inc. (CTCA) were due to announce on June 18 plans to open a $150 million hospital in Newnan expected to draw thousands of cancer patients from across the Southeast.
"It will make us a medical hub for cancer treatment in the southeastern United States," said Georgia Rep. Ron Stephens, R-Garden City, who sponsored a bill in the General Assembly paving the way for the company to set up shop in Georgia. "And the economic impact will be staggering."
CTCA officials state the hospital will create an estimated 500 jobs and generate $500 million in economic activity during its first five years in operation.
The Newnan location, a quick shot down Interstate 85 from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, fits in with CTCA's goal of providing easy access to patients flying into Atlanta.
Chicago-based CTCA currently operates hospitals in the Chicago and Phoenix suburbs, Philadelphia, and Tulsa, Okla.
